  • Summary

    • Andy is generally interested in the development and use of methods for describing, modelling and analysing Earth based systems and the processes that interact with people.
    • In terms of research, Andy can be interested in most scientific topics, but has a specific general interest in computational geography and the software and data developments that enable us to glimpse alternative futures and explore and explain patterns.
    • There are a number of topics that Andy is very keen to research geographically and at the forefront of these is road safety or road accident risk
      • Unfortunately there are road accidents that claim innocent lives and while this is still the case, there is work to be done!
    • There is a growing belief that something has to be done to control activity and prevent the likely environmental consequences being catastrophic to a great deal of life on Earth:
      • There is much that can be done to mitigate climate change impacts and preserve, conserve and sustain environments and habitats for future generations to enjoy, but what mitigation should take place?
      • How can we as a society adapt to change, evaluate what is worth saving and preserve not only our history, but also cultures and lifestyles?
    • In terms of methods based research in computational geography, Andy has a keen research interest involving the use, review, development and application of tools for analysing, visualising and disseminating geographical information
      • He is particularly interested in developing geographical analysis tools for generalising and exploring data at higher levels of spatial, temporal and attribute detail for larger geographical regions.
      • In terms of data, Andy ponders
        • What geographical data is collected?
        • What of this is available?
          • Under what usage constraints?
          • How can the discovery of data be automated?
        • What standards should we use for data and its metadata?
        • What is data error and uncertainty and how can it be measured?
        • How best can we archive, structure, assimilate and disseminate geographical information?
        • Andy Turner's Data Web Page
      • In terms of scale and pattern, Andy is interested in how things cluster at different temporal and spatial scales
        • What scales are important and how can they be focussed on?
