KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER THROUGH CONSULTANCY AND CPD

The School of Geography has strong links with both the public and private sectors and has undertaken independent research for diverse groups ranging from welfare charities to utilities organisations. We have created specific spin-out companies, and delivered projects and initiatives that provide solutions to real industrial problems. We are proud of the links we have fostered outside the academic community with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, and the way in which our research is influencing the policy of both national governments and international organisations.

We offer comprehensive training (face-to-face or by online distance learning) in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and modern analysis techniques listed below, but please contact us if you would like further information regarding bespoke CPD courses.

  • Java programming.
  • Census analysis.
  • Geodemographic marketing.
  • Service planning.

networking with
schools and colleges

We actively engage with local and national geography teachers and in 2008 set up a new branch of the Leeds Geographical Association. Visit our local page to find out more!

We also work closely with the Royal Geographical Society sending student ambassadors into schools, providing lecturers to give talks in schools, and supporting RGS initiatives to increase the profile and uptake of geography as a school subject.

schools outreach

We offer a variety of tours and activities to schools and individual visitors. These range from sixth form talks to fun workshops to engage primary school pupils with the areas of science that we study. Where possible we accommodate requests for visits, talks and workshops from individual schools. We are particularly interested in supporting schools who wish to develop our subjects within the curriculum, or who have large cohorts of students from the first generation of their family to consider higher education. For more information visit our Faculty outreach pages.
