The School of Geography at the University of Leeds is celebrating it 80th
Birthday in October 1999. To mark this major milestone the School organised
a conference "Future Geographies" on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th October 1999
to consider its history and heritage, and also to reflect on its
contributions to geographical research and scholarship. The School has longstanding
international research
reputations in spatial analysis and geocomputation, earth surface processes and
environmental change, environmental management, and population, society and space.
A mixture of leading internal and external speakers debated
past and future geographies, and the changing theoretical and methodological agendas for the next
millennium. It is anticipated that papers from the meeting will be published as
an edited collection.
On the Saturday night there was also a party, to which delegates, ex-students and staff, and the current School staff and students were all invited, with speeches by Graham Clarke, Alan Wilson, and Richard Smith. |
