      • Accepted a meeting on the 2006-11-30 12:00-13:00 to discuss...
      • IMHO both laboratory and field based studies can be enhanced with computer based visualisation and modelling work. No matter what is done, I think that one of the key things is online dissemination of the data collected in an OGC standards compliant manner. I think that is very important so that all can build on the work and it would include a full metadata detailing how the data was abstracted and processed. Additionally I would hope that the research would embrace open source software.

I don't think the argument about losing tundra to forest and little white fox to big red fox in Europe is going to help change the majority public into living a more sustainable lifestyle... But then it might and I don't have all the answers as to what a more sustainable lifestyle is... I was concerned about the bleeching of coral, but wondered if an adaption in the species is just araound the corner...

I watched the latest in the Planet Earth T.V. series after I listened. It was great!

            • The plan now is for her to run the dynamic simulation model for another area (other than Leeds), then together we will look into parallelising her code using MPJExpress.
            • To port our parallel code to WRG or NGS resources we need to understand better the mechanisms for submitting jobs and communication between chunks of processing (that can be for the most part calculated concurrently with no communication).
              • Maybe it is easier if all the communication takes place via a single master...
              • Hopefully we can get help from some grid engineers and MPJExpress developers when we're at this stage...

          • Andy is generally interested in methods for describing, modelling, simulating and analysing processes that interact in the ever expanding humanosphere - the space-time region that humans influence. Socio-economic systems can be adapted and influenced in various ways to mitigate environmental concerns and provide for sustainable development. Andy's research focusses on the characteristics, development and application of tools for assimilating, contextualising, modelling, simulating, analysing, visualising and disseminating geographic information. In particular, he is interested in developing tools for generalising and exploring data at higher levels of spatial, temporal and attribute detail for larger space-time regions. His research is collaborative and the outputs are openly available. The subject in which Andy specialises is known as GeoComputation.

            • Details of Beowulf usage for population initialisation
              • For the UK at Output Area Level we have approximately 200000 tasks which can be run independently, each uses a little over 1GB of memory and takes about 5 minutes on a cluster node utilising one of the Dual 2.66 GHz Xeon processors.
              • For the UK the entire run takes around 3 weeks utilising most of the SoG Beowulf.
          • I made a rather fundamental mistake...
            • I was not loading the CAS002 census data correctly for England and Wales, seriously effecting the population initialisation.
            • Originally I had got a joined CAS001 and CAS002 table from CASWEB, but in refactoring at some stage I messed up the CAS002 data loading by failing to get a separate CAS002 table file from CASWEB. Basically this mean't I was reloading CAS001 data thinking it was CAS002 data... It was hard to track down as the totals were fine, but the breakdown by gender and marital status was completely wrong...
            • A comparison of tables CAS001 and CAS002

              • This now looks much more reasonable than it did a day ago!
              • Interestingly it appears that an effect of SCAM is to cause a tick shape in these plots.
              • There are other interesting differences...

        • Steve Carver my new office neighbour and long standing friend, colleague and mentor popped in to say hello :)
          • We had a chat about Nuclear Waste and Wilderness research.
          • In the 20 year NIREX rule, documents are coming to light which should be cross referenced with Steve's PhD thesis.
          • I provided Steve with another box of Nuclear material, nothing radioactive or explosive though I don't think, but none-the-less could be useful.

          • Results for just optimising just on Age groups except the 80AndOver group.
            • I patched together a set of results, but after a first look, it seems there was a problem as contol constraint observed and expected are not the same for all OAs.
            • Re-running the analysis...

          • Parallel processing
            • There seems to be a problem with my use of waitany(Request[]) when collating the final set of jobs...
              • For some reason the program hangs even after all processing is done on the slaves and the results sent.
              • The strange thing is that in some cases some of the results are recieved on the master.
              • To try and work around this I used the waitall(Request[]) method to collate the final set of jobs.
                • Unfortunately this didn't work either...
              • I wonder what I'm doing wrong...
              • Next I tried to use waitany(Request[]) again but explicitely set to null a request after it has been recieved...
                • This resulted in a NullPointerException...
              • Not sure quite what tinkering solved this problem, but my program now seems to be working as expected :)
          • Data transfer...
          • Paul has maps working on the Portal :)
            • Unfortunately Paul ended up devising a bespoke colour shader rather than using anything in GeoTools...
              • Some of the useful GeoTools code of the past is obfuscated in the refactoring...
              • Nevermind, we are getting to grips with things again...
          • For the time being Paul is not using the data handler I provided
            • It would take a significant amount of code reorganisation.
            • Other things are more important for SC2006.
          • Paul and I chatted about aggregating HSAR Data records
            • I reckoned this code should live in an io package.
            • Basically we want a HashMap or similar to count for each value of a variable for both individuals and households.
            • Maybe I will get on to this while they are away at SC2006.

        • PESERA project webserver at JRC has become defunct
          • Brian Irvine asked how to take the files and host them as web content.
          • I suggested using the SoG webserver and the following URL http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/projects/pesera
          • To do this Brian needs to contact David Appleyard and get the directory in place so that he has permission to write to it.
          • The files can then be copied there so that all can access them.
          • Next Brian needs to think about metadata.
          • Finally Brian can think about developing the original content, fixing links and making it standards compliant etc...
