Year in industry and work placements

Three-quarters of employers provide paid vacation internships for penultimate year students and at least half offer industrial placements for undergraduates. Recruiters have once again stressed the importance of work experience in securing a job post-graduation. (The Graduate Market in 2017, High Fliers Research)

Listen to students and employers talking about our Year in Industry scheme:

Leeds is one of the few geography departments in the UK to offer a year in industry scheme in which students extend their three-year programme to a four-year industrial degree. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to add value to their CV and experience the ‘real world’ first-hand. All students who followed this programme in recent years went straight into graduate employment.

Even though the onus is on you as the student to secure a placement, we have strong relationships with high profile companies, local authorities and not for profit organisations who approach us each year to place our students as part of this scheme. We also provide you with lots of support during your search. The feedback from our students and employers is exemplary.Read our brochure to find out more.

Level 3 work placement module

We encourage you to get as much hands on experience as possible, whether this is through volunteering, summer placements or by enrolling on our level 3 work placement module.

The module is ideal for you if you don't wish to extend your programme to a four year industrial degree, but are nonetheless keen to gain work experience or if you are maybe thinking of a career in teaching. We have strong links with local companies and schools and offer a great deal of support to you in securing a work placement.

Level 3 Geographers into Teaching: School Placements

If it is a career in teaching you are interested in then this is the ideal module for you. We place you in a local school based on your preferred age group and on completion of this module you will have applied your knowledge and skills in geography in a classroom setting and will have prepared a set of learning materials of benefit to the school.
