‘Many employers will only consider applicants who have already done some form of placement with them – getting that experience before graduation is invaluable.’ (The Graduate Market in 2011, High fliers Research)
Leeds is one of the few geography departments in the UK to offer a year in industry scheme in which students extend their three-year programme to a four-year industrial degree. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to add value to their CV and experience the ‘real world’ first-hand. All students who followed this programme in recent years went straight into graduate employment.
We have strong relationships with high profile companies, local authorities and not for profit organisations who approach us each year to place our students as part of this scheme. The feedback from our students and employers is exemplary.
To listen to BA and BSc students who have recently completed a year in industry please visit our undergraduate programme pages.
Two of our long term partners talk about why they value the year in industry scheme so highly
We encourage students to get as much hands on experience as possible, whether this is through volunteering, summer placements or by enrolling on our level 3 work placement module.
There are two strands to this module:
The module is therefore ideal for students who don't wish to extend their programme to a four year industrial degree, but are nonetheless keen to gain work experience or who are maybe thinking of a career in teaching. We have strong links with local companies and schools and offer a great deal of support to students in securing a work or teaching placement.
