Project title

Spatial Distribution and Economic Contribution of Chinese visitors in the UK

This research will use geotagged social media data to investigate the spatial distribution of overseas Chinese populations in the UK.  These data should allow us to identify transient (e.g. tourist), seasonal (such as student) and permanent populations. Meanwhile, the economic contribution of Chinese visitors in the UK would also be explored at the local authority district level. The research seeks to:

  1. Use Chinese social media data to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of Chinese populations in the UK at the local authority district level;
  2. Validate social media derived population distribution against administrative and survey datasets;
  3. Estimate Chinese visitor retail spend in the UK at the local authority district level;
  4. Evaluate the economic and localised policy impactions of these expenditures.
