Surface runoff dynamics on dryland hillslopes

Project overview

The current measurement techniques for surface runoff factors (such as roughness, infiltration and vegetation cover) do not currently capture the true complexity of the dryland environment at the hillslope scale. Dryland environments currently cover 41.3% of the globe (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005), and most methods used to assess surface runoff have an agricultural basis in areas where crop resources are scarce, highlighting the importance of the accuracy and reliability of the methods used today.

Aims and objectives

  • To develop a more effective method for quantifying surface runoff in dryland environments
  • To assess the effectiveness of current measurement techniques in dryland environments
