Project title

Taste and the Boundaries of Local Food: Exploring Social and Cultural Food Geographies in South China

Project overview

This project is the research under the area of cultural geography, targeting at consumption and cultures of food. And it also relates to some topics like home, rural region, and materialisation (resource). Particularly it looks at cultures and practice of Chinese food. As it is known, China has historically developed the special culture whose philosophy and ideology are hugely different. That is the same situation in Chinese food culture. There are four (or eight) main cuisines in Chinese food culture which represents speciality in food ideology, food stories, skills of preparing and serving, food ingredients, etc. This project focus on Hakka food in South China – one of the special and traditional food types under the category of Cantonese food. It intends to explore the cultural, environmental and political factors concerning the Hakka food, and daily life food consumption and local food markets.

This project aims at exploring Chinese food cultures and practice. It will do this by examining the Hakka cuisine of Nanxiong (northern Guangdong Province) and its neighbouring regions, setting this within a broader cultural and historical setting. In so doing, I will aim to tell a broader story about the role of food in everyday Chinese life, relating it to issues of ethnicity, taste and tourism.
