Some Web Approaches to these Challenges

How can these Internet tools best be used to face some of these challenges faced by education.

General Advantages of using the Internet & the World Wide Web

Advantages Disadvantages
1 An increasingly large amount
of information is creating a
Global Database.
Much of it is unstructured
2 The WWW provides an easy to move
around this large global database
The hypertext format usually leads to
"surfing". Fun but unproductive
3 The WWW makes is relatively easy to
publish material
Easy to do, hard to do well!

General Advantages of using the Internet & the World Wide Web for teaching

The WWW provides flexible access to course material structured as virtual textbooks
Less dependance on the lecturer/teacher. Requires flexible access to computing facuilities

Email
Email provides a more flexible and in general quicker feedback mechanism again reducing the dependancy on the lectuer/teacher

Newsgroups
Newsgroups provide students with access to a global population of individual interested in the same subjects. This allows students to ask questions and find out things for themselves.

The resources of the global database can provide students with resources for projects and essays

In terms of Research the internet is also useful for
Distribution of research findings and also
obtaining information from large numbers of people
The main theme here is to reduce the dependance of the student on the lecturer/teacher and empower the student to that he/she is in a position where they can learn for themselves.
