  • Notes

    • Agree an agenda and appoint a chair
      • It was decided Paul should chair this one :-)
      • We agreed that the agenda I had drafted in this document was OK, but that there might be quite a lot in AoB (so added Dynamic Model as specific item).
    • Agenda:
      1. Recap on last meeting
      2. Requirements Documents and Portal Progress
      3. Optimisation
      4. Population Initialisation
      5. Dynamic Model
      6. AoB
    • Going through the agenda:
      1. Recap on last meeting
        • Went through Andy's notes from last time that can be found via the following URL:
        • Belinda noted that some of her actions that she had written down were not listed.
        • Google Maps and GeoServer
          • GeoServer now running on GEO-S12 at the following URL:
          • Is the API key problem solved by Google Earth Hacks?
            • Slashgeo : Google Earth Hacks Launches YourMap
            • Google Earth Hacks Home > YourMap
          • Paul has made good progress with SLDs and is actioned to show us a colour shaded map next time.
      2. Requirements Documents and Portal Progress
        • Reporting portlet
          • Paul to have a detailed working example for PCT health application by 2008-02-10.
        • Paul's work on turning everything into Web Services is ongoing.
        • Requirements Documents
          • We spent some time considering the detail of a Software Requirements Specification document Mark found on the Web:
            • I think it is available via: http://www.projectconnections.com/templates/detail/software-requirements-specification.html, you need a membership to see the full monté.
          • Paul has another example from the NECTISE project which is more of a matrix checklist of architecture on one axis and something else (functions?) on the other.
            • Paul to distribute this example of a requirements document.
          • It is noted that the two documents ultimately serve the same purpose.
          • Mark is to write systems level requirements and hand this to Paul.
          • Paul, then Andy then Belinda are then to draft functional requiremnts based on this.
          • We spent most time considering the interfaces between the various components which seems sensible.
      3. Optimisation
        • Paul has analysed the profiler output and has identified data access as taking an inordinate amount of time:
          • This is in the reading and writing of serialised objects from disc.
          • The main culprits are addPerson and getPersonsByLocation.
          • Belinda to send Paul test data to work with again.
          • Paul to try to understand what is happening and investigate options for optimisation (speeding this up).
      4. Population Initialisation
        • Mark provided a Validation of PRM Paper document for discussion:
          • We went through this in the following order:
            • Fig3
            • Fig4
            • Lookups
            • Fig2 (tables)
            • Fig5
            • Fig6
            • Fig7
          • Mark to complete variable analysis for Leeds.
          • Mark to investigate where are missing persons for IPS in Fig 6.
      5. Dynamic Model
        • Belinda provided a document containing diagrams explaining mortality, fertility, health and marriage processes in the Dynamic Model.
        • Paul suggested Microsoft Visio for developing these kinds of diagram. Some open source alternatives are suggested at the following URL:
        • Mortality
          • Rates worked out by age/gender at ward level based on ONS data and other data compiled by Paul Norman and Phil Rees.
          • Belinda to send Mark a digital version of the migration diagram.
        • Marriage
          • Where do people find spouses?
          • Currently in the model 50% of spouses are local.
          • Not sure where we get data on this
          • Some probability variables on who is likely to marry who can be derived from BHPS data.
          • The register of births deaths and marriage will also have data on age of partner.
          • I think Jianhui Jin did some work on this.
      6. AoB
        • Paul has developed some publicity material to be used for the upcoming White Rose Grid event.
          • This has been shown to Mark for approval.
        • Paul and Andy to be attending a White Rose Grid e-Science training event - a workshop about Taverna, on 2008-02-04, in Leeds, part organised by Shiv Kaushal.
        • Next Meeting
          • Suggested date 2008-02-19
        • Subsequent meetings
          • Noted leave:
            • Mark week after next.
            • Belinda next week.
          • Paul has a very busy time towards the end of March for a month or so.
    • Actions
      • Paul
        • Develop SLD code and present colour shaded maps from GeoServer at next Technical Meeting.
        • Reporting portlet - detailed working example for PCT health application by 2008-02-10.

        • To write up and distribute meeting notes as a priority.
