  • Notes

    • Nice Lunch at Prescatori :-)
      • Richard has not followed up on the Virtual Vellum leads.
        • He seems to know a bit about JPEG2000 and thought a performance and capabilities comparison between GoogleImageCutter and Virtual Vellum was a good project.
      • No plans to Open Source any CASA software :-(
        • I see this as a failure to engage in e-Science.
        • I reckon they will lose by not gaining unless they open up...
      • Andy and Richard in the process of launching MapTube.
    • The meeting propper
      • The Agenda guided us at times, but we sort of rambled over different items in an ad hoc fashion :-)
      • No Internet Connection I can use as yet, but I think Andy is going to help me :-).
      • Mark introduced MoSeS as Modelling and Simulation *in* e-Social Science
        • How important is that little word I wonder...
      • Mike noted that in GeoVUE they are not going to acheive what they originally set out to do.
      • The specification of deliverables and project management and documentation seems to be evolving in the same way iot did for the e-Infrastructure for the Social Sciences Project
        • Surely this is no accident, but it seems we are falling into this rather than it being imposed.
      • One view is that ESRC will not be too bothered about how we spend the funding so long as there are some research outputs.
      • Another view is that we should try to stick to the program of work outlined in the proposal and work plan.
      • How to relate to NCeSS
        • Reporting
        • Meetings in Manchester
        • Collaboration with other NCeSS Nodes
          • We went through and introduced the various Nodes of NCeSS old and new and dwelt on some that seemed most relevant:
            • Policy Grid
              • Agent Modelling of Rural Areas
              • Close in spirit to what we are doing in MoSeS/GENESIS
            • OeSS
              • Introspective and ethics
            • DAMES
              • Richard Sinnott
      • I outlined what we are doing developing a GLS for the NeSS Project
        • Nobody seemed interested, so I kept it very brief.
      • External to NCeSS important links
        • Research Methods Nodes
          • Nigel Gilbert
            • We should liaise and consider links.
      • It seems there is a lack of appreciation about what Grid computing is and what benefits it gives:
        • Lots of talk of "The Grid" and how "Web 2.0" has taken over from it.
          • I tried to explain the difference between NGS and other Grid computing resources
          • I tried to outline some issues to do with data security and access to computational resources.
          • I tried to explain that Grid Computing and Web 2.0 are actually quite different but complimentary.
            • Maybe some of that sunk in, who knows, I didn't get much of a response...
      • Need for a GENESIS architecture
        • We miss you Paul :-)
      • What high end computing will we need?
        • Andy mentioned he may have a need for render farms for visualisation work.
      • Primed, Alan asks about the use of a wiki :-)
      • Decided to use the NCeSS Sakai Portal :-)
        • I am to ask Xiaobo Yang to set this up for us and start the registration process for those without accounts.
      • Is GENESIS more about research or infrastucture building?
      • Are GeoVUE doing the housing bits and MoSeS doing the retail bits?
      • OPUS
        • http://www.urbansim.org/
        • This is not related, but interesting nonetheless:
      • What standards do we need to adhere to?
        • Standards for ABM
        • I remembered about Georgios Theodoropoulos and High Level Architecture (HLA) and http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/projects/dsgrid/
        • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_Communication_Language
      • Let's do it all ad hoc...
      • MoSeS did not sign a Hub node agreement did GeoVUE?
      • Need for a Work Package 0 for Project Management/Admin
      • We decided to take the work plan seriously and went through it in detail.
        • I won't detail this here!
        • Mark will edit the document and then Work Package leaders will be made responsible for Deliverable Specification using the wiki.
      • How do we get more resources for this and related work?
        • GENESIS can be a platform for further grant applications
      • Encouraged to write working papers/wiki pages about what is going on as it happens :-)
      • Who is going to write the final report for GENESIS?
      • Need to ensure the minimum requirements is met
      • Steering group
        • Chris Brunsdon, Georgios Theodoropoulos?
      • Date of next meeting
        • October TBC
    • Post meeting Drink :-)
      • Andrew Crooks interested in the Land Registry Housprice data I scraped last year from http://www.houseprices.co.uk and Land Map - Cities Revealed data.
      • Andrew, Martin, thanks, I owe you both a drink :-)
