Summary
The project will identify, analyse and compare population change
and internal migration processes in ten European countries

- The extent and the level of Rural Depopulation will be
examined and mapped and the demographic, social and economic
characteristics of depopulating rural areas analysed.
- The areas where Urbanisation, Suburbanisation and Counterurbanisation
play an important role will be identified. Population movements between
settlements classified by size, density, accessibility and uemployment will
be analysed. A classification of regions and countries by mix of processes will be constructed.
- An analysis of Changing Migration Patterns will be carried out.
The changes in the spatial age and sex patterns of internal migration in
the 1980s and 1990s will be studied. Particular attention will be paid to
the identification of the streams of migration in different life course stages
using migration data classified by age and sex.
- A synthesis report will summarise findings and comment on the policy
implications. A hypothesis that countries in transition have rapidly changed their
population development patterns will be tested.
- A number of publications in reviewed journals are planned. Full
results will be published as an Atlas of European Migration and Population Change.
