Project title

Movements around Water and Pursuit of Democracy: Democracy and Political Ecology of Water in Northeast India

Project overview

The proliferation of movements around  water calls for a complex, scholarly understanding of democratization that moves beyond electoral politics. My research will examine the central paradox in the practice of liberal democracy today.

At one level, this research study acknowledges that i.) the emergence of movements around water is a positive indication of an increasing awareness of rights and ii.) the commitment to fight for those rights is a success of democracy. Yet at another level it can be said that Indian democracy, with equality and liberty as its fundamental concerns, has failed to ensure that this principles are brought in practice today.

To explore this argument the study will look at movements against the hydro power projects on Teesta river in Northeast India.

Aims/objectives

To understand the implications for democracy from movements associated with water. Are these movements testimonies of democratic freedom or success or a failure of democracy?
