Research overview

Research Interests

Key areas: Biogeochemistry; forested and upland ecosystems; soil-solution interface; carbon; aluminium; base cations; soil and water acidification

Background:
My previous and current research includes:

  1. The effect of land management on (burning, afforestation) on soil and solution chemistry
  2. The link between the terrestrial environment and the fate of dissolved organic matter in streams
  3. The effect of altered atmospheric chemistry (acid rain) on soil solution and streamwater chemistry

PhD Supervision

Current students:

Kisandra Bynoe: Mechanisms and processes influencing the retention and release of dissolved organic carbon in upland organo-mineral soils

Alice Noble: Understanding plant-soil feedback effects impacted by peatland fire

Samuel Eze: Impact of climate change and land management on carbon dynamics of British upland grassland soils

I would be interested in supervising PhDs on topics such as:

  • The role of peat biogeochemistry on vegetation growth/re-establishment
  • Land management effects on carbon dynamics in non-peat upland soils
  • Geochemical feedbacks with new peat initiation
  • The effect of moorland burning on the organic geochemistry of peat
  • Cycling and fate of dissolved organic matter in streams
