Research overview

Luke Burns is a Lecturer in Quantitative Human Geography with research interests principally concerning geodemographics and the profiling of both small areas and individuals based on census and lifestyle data.  He also has strong interests in the application of GIS to a wide range of social-scientific fields such as crime, health, planning and business and has combined industrial employment and academic research in these areas.  Lots of his work makes use of the census and involves innovative methods for visualising and understanding data using GIS.  Luke has a growing interest in the pedagogical approaches of teaching quantitative methods to social scientists.
