Soil Type
Description
The map was created in ArcView and clipped out using XV. The original classification
of 200 soils in the source data was grouped into 6 categories with the
help of an expert soil scientist. The neural net inputs were six different
location grids, one for each soil class, and were generated in the grid
module of ArcInfo using the RECLASS command.

Comments
-
Obviously soil type is related to agricultural landuse, vines grow better
on sandy compared with cereals which grow better on heavier more loamy
soils.
-
Across the EU there is a wide range of different soils with different agricultural
capabilities and associated crop suitability.
-
The grouping of the 200 soils into a smaller number of categories could
be unique for each type of landuse being predicted.
