The WWW Interface

Communication between Individuals & Groups

Most of the more advanced WWW browsers, such as Netscape, have the ability to both send Email e.g. webmaster@geog.leeds.ac.uk

...& access the USENET Newsgroups such as comp.infosystems.gis

Transfering Information

A good web browser will also provide the ability to communicated with FTP servers such as the anonymous ftp server at the Leeds School of Geography.

Searching for Information

FAQs...being ordinary text files can easily be displayed as pages within a web browser.
Similarly Web interfaces to existing services can be contructed e.g. the ARCHIE service provided by Sun SITE at Imperial College London.
In addition new types of tools for searching have been developed inconjunction with the spread of the Web. Databases of web connections have been created with interfaces that allow users to search for text within them. The first of these is called Yahoo!.

Organising Information

A Web browser will also link with existing Gophers so that each of the menu hierarchy becomes a separate web page.
