History Legal Obligations Benefits Problems Wolf Case Study

INTRODUCTION

Wilderness has been widely defined as an area where the earth and its community of life are undisturbed by human activity.

In Britain today, the Scottish Highlands is one of the only areas that can be described as wilderness, remaining largely uninhabited and uncultivated.

Wildlife is an essential aspect of wilderness, however, due to the rise in human population over recent years the wildlife habitats have become increasingly threatened, causing species to become either endangered or even extinct, for instance, the wolf and the bear.

Reintroduction management programs have been proposed and in some cases implemented in an attempt to restore the threatened species.

The focus here will be to discuss the benefits and problems of the reintroduction program, with specific emphasis to the reintroduction of the wolf.
