MEDITERRANEAN FRANCE
Summary
This module introduces field methods in physical geography, focusing on research issues concerning mediterranean environments, and centred around a week-long field trip during the Easter vacation. During the first few days of the field trip, you will be introduced to the locale and to a range of different fieldwork skills which will then be put into practice by working in a small group on a self directed project.
Structure and Content
This trip includes study of the landscape history of the area, encompassing evidence of vegetation and geomorphological change during the Quaternary period, sediment sampling, description and interpretation, ecological surveys and investigations into both prehistoric and modern human impacts on the environment. During the trip you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of the climate, geology and vegetation in this region and how they have changed over time which all relates to the theories of geography and Earth system science that you will learn about through your course.
