FIELDTRIPS

The experience of taking part in field trips is one of the most enjoyable and memorable aspects of geography courses at Leeds. Field trips provide a fascinating opportunity to study a specialised subject in contrasting environments away from the University, and to learn essential fieldwork skills.

Level One

BSc students participate in a weekend residential fieldtrip in the first few weeks of term to Boggle Hole in North Yorkshire with an emphasis on team building and getting to know the staff. In addition, all first year students (with the exception of Geography-Geology students) undertake non-residential fieldwork within the Leeds area.

Level Two

Field trips are optional for both BA and BSc students. Human geographers may choose between Montpellier or Helsinki, both destinations providing opportunities to explore various aspects of geographical significance in the area, whether related to the city’s changing political roles, transportation development, economic activities or social problems. Physical geographers may choose the field class in Cevennes in the Massif Central in France examining the geology, soils, geomorphology, ecology, climate, and agriculture of the region; or to study the glacial landscapes, river processes and alpine vegetation in the stunning Austrian Alps.

Level Three

Students benefit from a rotating programme of international field trips – destinations include Greece (Athens) for BA Geography students, and New Zealand or Greenland for BSc Geography students. The Athens field trip looks at characteristics of the urban, regional and rural environments of Athens and its region; and the New Zealand trip offers a guided tour of several glaciated parts of the Mount Cook National Park on the south island, with students conducting their own research in Matukituki valley in Mount Aspiring National Park.
