TRAINING AND FACILITIES

Research Training

We are proud of the support we give our students in developing their careers. Not only do we offer expert and experienced postgraduate supervision, but we also offer a carefully designed programme of research training as a foundation for your future career. Training in generic research skills is offered through special courses for research postgraduates run by the department, the Faculty of Environment and the University. Specialist training and education in key themes in contemporary geography is also provided through the completion of modules from our range of Masters courses. As well as the usual career development and training opportunities, as a student at Leeds you will be encouraged to travel to international conferences, and given support in publishing academic papers. In addition, students can gain experience in teaching practical geographical skills by working as a demonstrator on relevant undergraduate or Masters modules.

Facilities

The School prides itself on its excellent facilities for research students. As a PhD student you will have your own space in an office, and usually your own personal computer. In addition, you will have full access to our state-of-the-art labs, advanced computing facilities and field vehicles. Additionally, you will have access to one of the largest university libraries in the United Kingdom, with a stock of over 2.8 million volumes. A wide range of databases, almost 30,000 electronic journals and full-text electronic resources are made available campus-wide and many are accessible remotely to staff and students.
