RESEARCH POSTGRADUATE FUNDING

Funding for PhD studies comes from a variety of sources including overseas universities or governments, industry, scholarships and private funding. Some students have already secured funding when they apply to the School, however many students are looking for funding to support their studies. The funding you may be able to apply for will often vary according to your nationality and the area of research you wish to undertake.

What funding will I need?

You will need to have funding to cover the cost of your fees and your living expenses. You may also need to cover the cost of any research expenses such as fieldwork or lab costs if your funding does not include these.

How do I apply for funding?

Funding can sometimes be attached to a particular project, but more often you will need to apply for a scholarship funded by the University, one of the Research Councils or an external government or organisation. University and Research Council scholarships are usually advertised in November with application deadlines between January and April. To maximise your chances of success, you should apply to as many funding sources as possible. Some funding opportunities are listed below however a fuller list and more country-specific opportunities can be found on the  University's Postgraduate Scholarship website.
