RESEARCH POSTGRADUATE FUNDING
Funding for PhD studies comes from a variety of sources including overseas universities or governments, industry, scholarships and private funding. Some students have already secured funding when they apply to the School, however many students are looking for funding to support their studies. The funding you may be able to apply for will often vary according to your nationality and the area of research you wish to undertake.
What funding will I need?
You will need to obtain funding to cover the cost of your fees and your living expenses. You may also need to cover the cost of any research expenses such as fieldwork or lab costs if your funding does not include these.
Which sources of funding are available?
Funding can sometimes be attached to a particular project, but more often you will need to apply for a scholarship funded by the University, one of the Research Councils or an external government or organisation. University and Research Council scholarships are usually advertised in the new year with application deadlines between January and May. To maximise your chances of success, you should apply to as many funding sources as possible. The main funding opportunities are listed here however the University has an excellent scholarship website which is regularly updated. If you have any questions about your funding options, please contact Jacqui Manton or Val Marrison in the School’s Research Postgraduate Office.
Applying for funding
Before you consider where to apply for funding, you should have decided on the degree you wish to take and the topic you want to research. You will also need to have applied for or obtained a conditional offer of a place to study in the School. If you are funded by an overseas university, government, company, etc., or you are self funding, you will only need to apply for a place in the School, specifying the funding you have in place.
