ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Admissions information
The normal entry requirements for research degrees are a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, in geography or a related subject. A Masters degree is also a valuable asset when applying for funding. Applications are also welcome from individuals who do not have these qualifications, but have substantial employment or other experience providing a suitable foundation for a research degree.
English language requirements
Students whose first language is not English are required to meet minimum standards in English by achieving the following scores in either IELTS or TOEFL:
IELTS: | 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in all components. |
TOEFL IBT (Internet-based TOEFL) | 87 with a minimum score of 21 in listening and writing, 22 in reading and 23 in speaking. |
Once you arrive at Leeds to start your research degree, you will also need to take the University of Leeds English language test. This helps identify areas where you may need further support. Term-time English courses are available free of charge at the University’s Language Centre once you have registered as a PhD student.
When can I start?
Most students begin their research degrees on 1st October in the year in which they start. This start date is often determined by the funding body (particularly for UK/EU students). One of the advantages of starting in October is that you are able to take advantage of the introductory courses for new PhD students and introductory events on offer at the University as well as starting alongside other new students. However, provided your funding your allows it, it is possible to start on the first of any month.
