MA IN SOCIAL AND CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY
COURSE OVERVIEW
The course combines three elements: a thorough grounding in theory and method in contemporary social and cultural geography; a sustained engagement with research being carried out by leading academics in the School; and the opportunity to undertake an in-depth piece of independent research for a dissertation.
On completion of the course you will develop a sophisticated understanding of key themes in contemporary social and cultural geography and greater confidence in your ability to conduct research independently. Our ethos at Leeds is to involve taught postgraduate students fully in the life of the School through opportunities for formal and informal interaction with academic staff and postgraduate research students, attendance at School seminars, and participation in the events of our specialist research clusters in human geography.
On the course you will be exposed to a range of theoretical approaches in the module Space and Social Theory, taking you from the modernist period through postmodernism and more recent, radical theoretical alternatives. You will also have the opportunity to explore cutting edge themes in social and cultural geography through two modules associated with the School’s research clusters on “Citizenship and Belonging” and “Urban Culture and Consumption”.
The course provides recognised research training for ESRC 1+3 doctoral studentships (one year Masters followed by three years PhD study).
The course offers:
- A thorough grounding in theory and method in contemporary social and cultural geography.
- A sustained engagement with research being carried out by leading academics in the School.
