MA IN ACTIVISM AND SOCIAL CHANGE

COURSE OVERVIEW

This innovative and original interdisciplinary course brings together the worlds of academia and radical social campaigning. It is led by academics working and researching with social movement organisations and communities struggling for autonomy (i.e. the belief in society organised collectively through the practice of self-management, mutual aid and direct democracy).

The course offers:

  • An introduction to core ideas in radical and transformatory social theories and strategies.
  • An overview of global social movement struggles with particular reference to the Global South.
  • Grounding in research methods relevant to campaigning and social change.
  • Contemporary political debates about alternatives to neoliberal development and the critical challenges we face.
  • Guest lectures and workshops by journalists, campaigners, researchers and activists.
  • Action research with social movements and campaign groups through placements.
