Information for employers

Students at the School of Geography are highly motivated, knowledgeable about their subject and eager to develop new skills. If you are looking to recruit well qualified graduates or are interested in offering long or short term placements we can help.

You can also get involved by attending the Faculty Careers Fair, delivering a presentation to students or attending networking events.  We also offer facilities for interviewing and we advertise vacancies via email and our Careers Centre jobs vacancy database. We continue to keep in contact with our graduates via Facebook and Linked in so we can reach students well after graduation.

Guest speakers

The School is happy to welcome industry professionals who can pass on their knowledge and experience to our current student body.  Career talks are a compulsory addition to our level 2 careers module and within the module we have eight presentations by employers. If this is something you would like to get involved in please contact our Professional Development Manager.

Recruiting a placement student

Geography students are looking for a placement between their second and final year of study. There are several reasons why an employer may benefit from taking a Leeds student on a placement:-

  • Our placement students are highly motivated, well qualified and bring their current knowledge with them
  • Recruitment costs are minimal as placements are advertised at no cost to the employer
  • A 12-month placement creates the opportunity to assess potential employees without long term obligation
  • Companies have an employee who is committed to developing his/her skills throughout the placement
  • You'll improve your links with the University of Leeds, which can provide a range of opportunities, particularly in research and innovation

Students undertake an assessment whilst on placement and keep in regular contact with the University about how they are progressing.  A placement tutor visits the student during the year to make sure everything is going smoothly.  Dedicated members of staff are available throughout the year if any issues arise during the student’s placement.

If you are thinking of offering a placement or simply want to advertise a vacancy, please contact our Professional Development Manager or telephone 0113 343 6754.
