CENSUS DATA IN CONTRACT RESEARCH
-
ESRC/JISC encourage academic researchers to use the data in applied research.
To use census data in a contract for government or commercial purposes,
you must arrange the necessary licence with the relevant Census
Office or mapping agency or data unit (for the SARs).

See for an example of applied research the assessment by Peter Batey and
Peter Brown (Liverpool) of the chances of young persons entering higher
education, using UCAS student data with the ED/postcode directory and an
ED geodemographic classification. Their report on The Influence of Neighbourhood
Type on Participation in Higher Education (HEFCE, Bristol, 1997) was
prepared for the Dearing Committee on HE.
