THE ESRC/JISC CENSUS PROGRAMME
-
ESRC stands for the Economic and Social Research Council, which funds social
science research in UK Universities and Research Institutes on a competitive
and peer-reviewed basis.
-
JISC stands for the Joint Information Systems Committee. The JISC is a
joint organization set up by the Higher Education Funding bodies of England,
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to fund information technology investment
in UK Universities.
-
The census data are purchased for academic research and teaching jointly
by the ESRC and the JISC, and provided free at the point of use
to any registered academic user via a network of data units. The ESRC supports
data units, projects and administration and the JISC funds data purchase
and server/network infrastructure in a joint Census Programme.
-
The ESRC/JISC Census programme supports the provision of census data for
academic research and teaching purposes. It consists of some six separate
elements:
+ Data Sets and Data Products, licensed from the Census Offices
+ Data Units, which maintain and disseminate the data
+ a Training Programme, currently provided by the Data Units
+ a Development Programme, with projects currently preparing
for the 2001 Census
+ a Research Programme, projects carried out in the mid-1990s
+ a Co-ordinator, for the period 1998-2002.
