| The
development of the AfriTRON network is a major international scientific
effort, which sometimes requires the transfer of unpublished data
between participants. All the participants have undertaken the
time and energy required to successfully complete fieldwork, often
under difficult conditions. Following this there is a major investment
in entering and checking data and herbarium work to produce high-quality
data. There intellectual property implications at each stage of
the process need careful assessment. AfriTRON uses data-sharing
agreements whereby participants allow their data to be utilised
to attempt to answer a specific question by specific researchers. The transfer of any data between participants in the network does not imply the transfer of rights to publication of the data or to pass the data on to other research groups or institutions. Therefore, all participants agree to first obtain the consent of the data owners before submitting any work for publication. In addition, participants agree to involve those contributing data whenever this is appropriate (for example, in analysis, writing, and co-authorship of resulting publications), and ensure researchers receive adequate acknowledgement for the use of their data by other researchers. We are very interested in expanding the network, please contact Simon Lewis if you are interested in being involved.
