iCASP Comms Officer

With a former career as a BBC broadcaster and experience as a web-designer, consultant and science communication trainer, Susan comes to her role as iCASP Communications Officer with a passion for presenting relevant and useful research in an engaging way.

Susan is involved in developing the iCASP website, organising and facilitating events, and publicising outputs to target audiences.

One of her key challenges over the next five years is to support the development of a network of expertise on integrated catchment management approaches which will still be available to share insights and experience with other regions when iCASP is over.

She is also determined to walk the Dales Way and other long-distance footpaths from her front door in Guiseley!

Research Fellow

My research aims to understand the effect of anthropogenic-related changes in the environment on tropical forests. I focus on how trees with distinct ecological strategies respond to these changes and how different responses will affect ecological communities and ecosystemic processes.

I am currently working as postdoctoral research fellow at the Ecology and Global Change cluster. My work is part of the NERC-funded project TREMOR (Mechanisms and consequences of increasing TREe MORtality in Amazonian rainforests).

water@leeds R&IDM

As Research & Innovation Development Manager for water@leeds ( I work with University of Leeds researchers to support water-related opportunities.

Emergent ideas and interdisciplinary teams benefit from getting the right support at the right time—I help researchers craft applications answering the most appropriate funding opportunities, I work with central Research & Innovation Services to help evaluate the commercial potential of innovations, and I connect businesses seeking expertise to specialist researchers.

My water sector experience includes work for the regulators (Environment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and for the regulated (Yorkshire Water)—including roles specialising in:

  • water industry-focused foresight, technology scouting & risk monitoring;
  • research, development and implementation;
  • fostering innovation, knowledge management;
  • environmental regulation and data governance;
  • wastewater asset management; and
  • waste management licensing (solid waste).

I have recently joined the Canal and River Trust North East Partnership Board (

I have an MsC in Biodiversity and Conservation from University of Leeds (, Leeds, UK) and a BA in Anthropology and English from Case Western Reserve University (, Cleveland, Ohio, USA).

iCASP Prog. Manager

As Programme Manager for the Yorkshire Integrated Catchment Solutions Programme (iCASP), Rob is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day delivery of iCASP, including managing the iCASP staff and the relationships between all of the organisations involved.

Rob will be using his project development and management experience, and his technical background in climate change adaptation and environmental policies in multiple countries, from his time at United Nations Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and BirdLife International, to help deliver success for iCASP.

Rob’s challenges will include staying on top of the partner’s needs and the research that is available to address these, as well as identifying opportunities for the future development of iCASP, whilst still finding time to do his fell running across Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria!

Rob has an M.A. in Geography from the University of Cambridge and a MSc. in Nature, Society and Environmental Policy from the University of Oxford.

iCASP supports regional organisations and researchers to use environmental science to manage flood and drought risk in the context of climate change, improve water quality, and enhance the carbon storage, productivity and resilience of the region’s soils and woodlands, through joined-up approaches to land and water management in the River Ouse basin. This is expected to generate more than £50 million of benefits for the region from influencing investments, identifying cost savings, and creating new products and jobs.
