Teaching Experience: I have

  • Taught at all levels and in a wide range of formats including: lectures, tutorials, practicals, workshops, team project groups, field classes.
  • Developed new innovative modules which are informed by my research at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Developed a wide range of audio-visual aids and innovative interactive learning techniques for use in my lecturing and small group teaching, including: role plays, debates, making a video, and diary and planning exercises.
  • Written a single authored textbook and co-edited textbooks, as well as publishing articles in edited books for undergraduates. In this way, my teaching is being transmitted to a wider audience. I have also published in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education.

Other Teaching Related Activities

  • I was invited to chair the Higher Education Academy Curriculum Innovation for Diversity Conference, York (September 2006)
  • I have supervised 20 PhD students (see list of current students below)
  • I have examined 20 PhD theses from 4 different disciplines and 5 countries (USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand).
  • I have acted as an external examiner for undergraduate degree programmes and conducted subject reviews at Liverpool John Moores University and University of West of England.
  • I have given lectures at University Undergraduate Geographical Societies including: University of Durham, University of Lampeter, Royal Holloway, London, and University of Cork.
  • I have given lectures at University Undergraduate Geographical Societies including: University of Durham, University of Lampeter, Royal Holloway, London, and University of Cork.
  • Received invitations from: University of Helsinki, Finland (May 2006) to teach a postgraduate master class workshop; Gronigen University, Netherlands to teach on a gender workshop, (May 2004); Women and Geography Study Group to give a lecture at its undergraduate conference on Feminist Geographies Today, RGS, London (March 1998); and the Social Cultural Study Group to give a lecture at its postgraduate training conference, UCL, London (April 1998). Invited to give research training workshops at the Wessex Consortium Postgraduate Workshops (1994 and 1995).
  • Invited to give a presentation to Staffordshire Local Education Authority geography school teachers about new directions in geographical research, Newcastle-under-Lyme (February 1999).
