  • Introduction

    • The SPIN!-project was funded by the European Commission Fifth Framework IST programme under contract code:
      • IST-1999-10536 SPIN!
    • The project was funded for 3 years from 2000-01-01 until 2002-12-31.
    • A reconstructed project web page is available via the following URL:
    • The original project proposal and a project summary in a MS Word document format are available via the following URLs:
      • http://www.ccg.leeds.ac.uk/projects/spin/proposal/SPIN proposal final version.doc
    • The project
      • Developed a spatial data mining system for data of public interest comprised of a number of components which were integrated using Enterprise Java Beans
        • One component of this system was a spatial cluster detection tool (Cluster) which was an implementation of a number of spatial clustering methods in Java.
      • The project supported a number of partners to develop skills and experience in project management, software evaluation, software development, software use, system integration, and collaborative working.

    • A copy of the SPIN! system as it was at the end of the project is archived at the University of Leeds, but has not been actively developed there.
    • The stand-alone Cluster component developed for of the SPIN! system
      • Was made available on-line from the end of the project along with the source code and can be downloaded as a zip file via the following URL
        • http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/people/a.turner/src/andyt/java/projects/Spin/spin-cluster/cluster.zip
      • Has been used in teaching at the University of Leeds in a spatial analysis module.
      • Not developed or integrated in any other system until late 2010 when Ian Turton and I decided to refactor the code and develop an abstract for GeoComputation 2011?
    • Spatial Cluster Detection Google code repository
      • https://code.google.com/p/spatial-cluster-detection/
      • Set up by Ian Turton on 2010-12-16.
    • The plan is to use the GeoTools process API (see http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTDOC/Implementing+a+new+Process) to control things and develop a Web Processing Service (WPS) to test with GeoServer.
