  • Introduction

    • Rural areas in the UK are experiencing considerable change. The Rural Economy and Land Use Programme (RELU) aims to advance understanding of the challenges they face. RELU is funding interdisciplinary research in order to inform future policy and practice with choice on how to manage the countryside and rural economies.
    • I have been involved in two projects focussing on upland areas (described in this page). I am interested in further collaboration and offer expertise in e-Social Science, information management, GIS and modelling.
  • Sustainable Uplands Projects

    • Sustainable Upland Management for Multiple Benefits

      • (August 2004 - July 2005)
      • Funded by RELU as a Scoping Study (RES-224-25-0088)
      • This scoping study combined knowledge from local stakeholders, policy-makers and social and natural scientists with a view to anticipating, monitoring and sustainably managing rural change in UK uplands.
      • As a co-investigator Andy's role was to attend meetings and provide advice on implementing and developing a Geographic Information System.
      • The project used the Virtual Knowledge Park; for project management and information organisation, and as a repository.
      • Advice on GIS options was compiled into a Working Paper. Unfortunately there was no feedback on this working paper during the course of the scoping study.
      • Project outputs are available via the Sustainable Uplands Project Home Page
      • This work is carried forward in another RELU funded project Managing Uncertainty in Dynamic Socio-Environmental Systems: An Application to UK Uplands.
    • Managing Uncertainty in Dynamic Socio-Environmental Systems: An Application to UK Uplands

      • (March 2006 - Present [Completion date March 2009])
      • Funded by RELU (RES-227-25-0001)
      • The project used the Virtual Knowledge Park; for project management and information organisation, and as a repository.
      • Scientists and researchers are to join forces with locals and policy makers to develop a framework that could be applied throughout the UK uplands to find new ways for people to detect change and harness it for their advantage.
      • As a co-investigator Andy's role is:
        1. to attend meetings;
        2. support the research assistant (Nanlin Jin) working on Integrated Modelling, GIS Development and Agent Based Modelling;
        3. provide expertise and guidance on the development of a Geographic Information System;
        4. identify opportunities and develop outputs for disseminating this work.
      • Meetings

        • 2006-06-14 (Co-Investigator meeting)
        • 2006-05-05 (Monthly meeting)
        • 2006-02-27 - 2006-02-28 Project kick off meeting... unable to attend due to engagement...
        • 2006-02-23 Nanlin Jin Interview... She was offered the job despite having no GIS experience!
      • Collaboration

        The Managing Uncertainty in Dynamic Socio-Environmental Systems: An Application to UK Uplands Project should look to set up many collaborations both within RELU and what is currently beyond.

          Collaborations to be made:
