  • Introduction

    • This page provides information about reviews I have undertaken during the course of my job.
    • Review is an incremental process.
      • Periodic reflection on past aims and achievements is useful to understand personal development.
    • The University of Leeds (UoL) has advocated various formal staff review schemes which have evolved over time.

    • History

      • This section provides a history of my personal staff and research reviews whilst employed by the University of Leeds (UoL)
      • My first fixed term research contract was as a Research Assistant for the period 1997-10-01 to 1998-09-30:
        • The review process began one month into the post as my supervisor Stan Openshaw and me agreed target competancies/skills to be developed in Year One.
        • Plans providing guidance, developmental opportunities and training to meet identified objectives were made.
        • Prior to the end of this contract a new fixed term contract was drawn up for the period 1998-10-01 to 1999-09-30.
      • My second fixed term research contract was as a Research Assistant for the period 1998-10-01 to 1999-09-30:
        • Again Stan Openshaw and me agreed target competancies/skills to be developed in that year and further plans providing guidance, developmental opportunities and training to meet identified objectives were made.
        • Documents were prepared for my first Staff Review.
        • For some reason(s) the Staff Review process stalled although I recall an informal review type assessment meeting at which my mentor Steve Carver provided me with verbal re-assurance.
        • Prior to the end of this contract a new fixed term contract was drawn up for the period 1999-10-01 to 2000-03-31.
      • My third fixed term research contract was as a Research Assistant for the period 1998-10-01 to 1999-09-30:
        • During this period I successfully applied for promotion from Research Assistant to Research Officer and began a new fixed term contract from 2000-01-01 to 2002-12-31.
      • My fourth fixed term research contract was as a Research Officer for the period 1998-10-01 to 1999-09-30:
        • In this period Ian Turton acted as my supervisor and an annual review process was re-initialised.
        • This review process stalled after the second iteration.
      • My fourth, fifth and sixth fixed term research contracts as a Research Officer were for the periods 2003-01-01 to 2004-10-31, 2004-11-01 to 2005-03-31, 2005-04-01 to 2005-07-31.
      • On 2005-03-07 I drafted a Work Plan and prepared a Self Assessment Form for a Research Review with Adrian Bailey, Head of the School of Geography.
      • A new fixed term contract was drawn up for the period 2005-07-01 to 2008-06-30.
      • On 2005-08-24 I signed a new contract ammending my existing contract such that it is was no longer of a fixed term nature. This was in accordance with UoL policy.
      • I now have an annual review as part of the University of Leeds Staff Review and Development Scheme
        • I initially had a bad experience with this, but have generally managed to make this a positive experience!
