Research Activities
You will be assigned to work on projects at the discretion of the Head of School of
Geography and under the guidance of the Research Cluster leader and Principal
Investigators concerned. This post is usually funded from external grants and contracts.
Your role in any of these grants or contracts will depend upon your skills, experience
and aptitude and will be decided in discussion with Research Cluster leader and
Principal Investigators. Each of the grants or contracts you are involved with may
carry certain contractual obligations which you will be expected to respect.
You may be required to undertake other duties should appropriate grants or contracts not
come available and as specified by the Head of School or Director of Research.
In addition you would normally be expected to undertake the following:

Attend conferences/meetings and present papers where appropriate.

Maintain a research publications record via ULPD and a record of Esteem Indicators.

Provide input on project related matters, eg selection of new staff, resource
requirements.

Manage project(s) for which you are a Project Manager.

Look for ways to generate new research proposals by being aware of new funding
opportunities and contribute to the writing of research proposals.

Maintain a high standard of research output (the normal expectation being 1
refereed ISI journal article and 1 refereed conference paper, book chapter or
equivalent per year, to the authorship of which you have made a substantial
contribution).

Actively participate in meetings of the Research Cluster(s) to which you are assigned.

Take responsibility for furthering your personal knowledge of the research area(s) in
which you work.

Undertake to complete PhD.

Provide guidance to junior staff on research related matters.

Other duties consistent with the overall aims of the School.
Teaching/Student supervision
Your workload may include teaching on Geography modules, including levels 1 & 2
tutorials, work placement students, research placement students, short courses,
assisting in supervision of PhD students and supervising MSc/MA dissertations. This
will be agreed by discussion with the programme leaders concerned and where appropriate
the Director of Learning and Teaching.
Other activities
Within the normal weekly pattern of work funded by such projects, it is expected that
you will contribute to more general School activities such as attending seminars,
departmental and research cluster meetings, generating research proposals and
publications.
Research staff are also expected to:

Meet with their Staff Reviewer on a regular basis, to discuss Personal Development
Plan.

Continue taking responsibility for their own staff development, by attending
training courses as provided by SDDU or elsewhere.

Be alert to risks and opportunities:
- a)
by taking steps, where possible and appropriate, to minimise any adverse risks or
maximise any opportunities
- b)
report (to the appropriate person as identified on the School of Geography Risk
Register) any significant risks or opportunities that become apparent
- c)
be responsible for your own safety and minimise risks of endangering safety of
yourself or others

Participate in departmental activities eg by attending appropriate departmental
meetings.

Keep records (via timesheets) of activities undertaken (including leaves of absence).

Register holidays/sickness/other leaves of absence with School Human Resources Manager.

Undertake administration or other duties as requested by Head of School.
You may also find that opportunities arise for you to become involved in consultancy
work. All such requests, whether they come to you privately or for the School generally,
should be referred to the Head of School or Director of Research as soon as they are
received. All such activity must have the approval of the Head of School and be
performed in accordance with the conditions specified for consultancy arrangements.
All allocations of your time, and any conflicts in the demands on your time, will be
determined in discussion with the person who is assigned to you as your staff manager.
