Project title

Child food insecurity and the impact of welfare reform on household food insecurity

Project overview

My study explores two interrelated themes: the conceptualisation of child food insecurity and the impact of welfare reform on household food insecurity. The research questions, objectives and an outline of my proposed methods is found below.

Research question 1

How do British children experience food insecurity?

  1. To gain a rich understanding of British children’s lived experiences of food insecurity
  2. To confirm, refine or modify the ‘domains’ (dimensions) of child food insecurity as presented in the existing literature, and, as such, to add to the current understanding, as developed in the US and Venezuela, of child food insecurity
  3. To generate a conceptualisation of food insecurity as experienced by children in the UK

Research question 2

What is the link between welfare reform and household food insecurity?

  1. To investigate any links between welfare reforms – both to social security (policies which provide relief) and wider policies (such as National Living Wage or increasing labour market demand) (see Lambie-Mumford, 2014b p. 147) - and household food insecurity
  2. To explore what role the state should have in ensuring that its citizens do not experience food insecurity
  3. To produce a set of key messages for policy makers

The following methods will be used to answer the research questions:

  • Focus groups with children aged 9-11 years old
  • Individual one-to-one interviews with children aged 9-11 years old
  • Longitudinal study: 3 waves of interviews with 8 family groups – one adult (the Key Food Provider) and one child aged 8-11 years old
