Masters Programmes: Key Skills in Computing
Uploading and the Web

School of Geography, University of Leeds

This section will briefly discuss uploading files to the VLE and where you can built your own website.

It will cover:

Uploading to the VLE

The process for submitting your work will vary depending on the assessment. You'll be asked to hand some things in on paper, upload some things to assessment areas of the VLE, and some things will be uploaded into the TurnItIn area of the VLE. You'll do the latter in the next couple of days. TurnItIn is a piece of software for managing academic assessment submissions, and checks for plagiarism against a wide variety of online and offline resources, along with essay banks and other student work. In general, the upload process looks something like this:

1. Go to the VLE (http://vlebb.leeds.ac.uk) and access the module area.
2. Find the assessment / assessment upload area.
4. Choose the 'Single file upload' option in the paper item submission method box (if it is a single file).
5. Select your name from the Author drop down box.
6. Give your submission a title making sure you include your name: i.e. family name_week1essay
7. Use the browse button to find your file that you wish to upload and click on Upload.
8. Review the file and click on the 'Submit' button to finalise the submission. You will then receive a digital receipt - KEEP THE RECEIPT SAFE.

Setting up your own website

You can also upload materials for more general circulation to your own personal website that the University provides for you while you're a student.

This is relatively trivial to set up. You can find details on the Personal Webspace page (NB: it can take up to 24 hours to update, especially the first time you do this). Of course, you'll need to know how to write webpages to do this. Those doing the GEOG5990 core programming module will cover this later in the term, but if you're not doing that course or want to learn beforehand, you can find a tutorial here. Once you can write a webpage, you can just link to any file you want to distribute with an anchor tag, provided it is in your web directory. Obviously there are some guidelines on this you need to stick within.
