Masters Programmes: Key Skills in Computing

This section will briefly discuss the software we have available.

It will cover:

Important generic software you need to understand

There are ~2000 different applications installed across the campus, and as a geography student you'll have access to a couple of hundred of them. Chances are, however, you'll only really want to use 10 or 20 of them.

The software you really need to get your head around (other than that which you'll be taught directly by us), is the Microsoft Office Suite, most notably Word (for writing documents), Excel (for dealing with data), and Powerpoint (for making presentations). If you are not familiar with these pieces of software, please work through the University's IT Induction tutorial system. The induction system also includes training on Internet Explorer, for browsing the web.

Buying computers and software at student rates

You don't need your own computer for the course (though it is certainly very useful), nor do you need to buy your own software. However, if you do have your own machine, and wish to buy software for it for the time you are a student, at a student rate, then you can buy this via the University IT Shop. They have a wide range of software, including Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, MapInfo, and SPSS. In some cases, the price is considerably reduced for students. ArcGIS, for example, is ~16 to 21 pounds (depending on which version you get). If you want a laptop or Personal Computer (PC), they also have information on where to get those. Finally, under the Microsoft Student Advantage scheme, you can get free copies of Office software -- more details here.
