"After finishing my geography degree I began applying for graduate schemes within the field of environment. I enjoyed the environmental modules I took during my degree and this encouraged me to pursue a career in it. However, I soon realised that many employers require graduates to have a Masters in environment and as jobs are so competitive, I didn’t really stand a chance.
I was not keen on doing a Masters straight away and so I considered other areas such as urban planning and transport planning, where employers do consider geography graduates. After numerous application forms and lots of phone calls and perseverance I secured a place on the Transport for London graduate scheme. I begin in September as a transport planner within surface transport and I will be working on a number of projects around London, perhaps even the Olympics!
The skills I gained from my geography degree have really helped my confidence in the world of work. I not only have skills in statistics, field work, report writing and research but also communication and presenting which are all very important in day to day work.
Leeds was a great city in which to study. It has such a lively atmosphere with such a huge student population and there is loads to do! There are so many difference societies to join and there are always events going on providing something for everyone.
I have a few months free now before I start at TfL in September so I am off to Africa and South America to see what that has to offer!"
